Virtual Dressing Room for Brides

Posted by on September 20, 2011 · Leave a Comment

ali-wedding-dress A few years ago, when it was my time to find the perfect wedding dress, I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to play dress up. After putting on my second gown, I felt that immediate connection that told me it was “the one.”

After watching too many episodes of Say Yes to the Dress, I resisted the temptation of trying on different styles and silhouettes to avoid confusing myself and wasting the consultants time.  Although, I do not regret my purchase, how could I pass up my once in a lifetime opportunity?

Thanks to the new Virtual Dressing Room by Brides Magazine , I can secretly revisit the experience from my computer. Getting started is easy… Simply upload a full length picture of yourself (the less coverage the better), follow the prompts to adjust to your figure and let the fun begin.

Vintage bridal styles inspired by the Tube

Posted by on April 11, 2011 · Leave a Comment

People have been going MAD over the hit TV series, Mad Men on AMC.  The award winning show fuels our love for vintage fashion and has been inspiring many 1960′s style brides and celebrations.

The Aisle Say blog from Brides.com offers some easy tips for having your own Mad Men style wedding.

Here’s my quick recap:

Mad-Men-inspired-wedding-tips

*All photos courtesy of Brides.com

  1. Retro style hair waves (use a large barreled curling iron to get them)
  2. Where a pair of white wedding gloves (shorter styles work best)
  3. Get a wedding dress with sleeves- women of the day were too modest to show off their shoulders
  4. Where a birdcage wedding veil
  5. Choose knee or secretary length bridesmaid’s dresses (“wiggle dresses”)
  6. Wear bold, red lipstick
  7. Serve 1960′s style cocktails like Mint Julep’s (bourbon, mint and sugar) in vintage glasses
  8. Wear pearl jewelry-or adorn your bridesmaids with them
  9. Rent a vintage luxury car for your transportation instead of a limo

I love love love these Mad Men inspired wedding invitations created by Danielle Leopold Designs.  Every single detail, from the bold colors and unique fonts to the vintage photograph RSVP cards was cleverly constructed to complete the ultimate vintage invitation set.

If you’re more of a crafty and hands on bride, you can make your own Mad Men Save the Date I found on Your Savvy Soiree (originally posted by the Wedding Chicks)

This backyard style Mad Men inspired wedding, photographed by Dana Grant and posted last year on the brilliant Green Wedding Shoes blog has been bookmarked for 10 months and it’s still as impressive as it was when I first came across it.

There are SO many extraordinary images and details to this celebration that you cannot miss.  Visit Green Wedding Shoes and get the complete coverage of  Catie and Ben’s Real Wedding.  After four incredible seasons, there should be plenty more 1960′s Mad Men inspiration circulating the web.

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new vintage era in TV land.  HBO’s latest series, Boardwalk Empire, has opened up eyes and hearts to the fabulous Roaring 1920′s. Beaded, fringed and feathered frocks, pearls galore and Great Gatsby style parties… need I say more?  If only I could have been a real flapper…

Finding an amazing and glamorous 20′s style gown should not be a difficult task these days.  Bridal Gowns by Jenny Packham and Sue Wong bridesmaids dresses immediately come to mind but there’s much more out there.  Of course, any ensemble can be jazzed up (cheesy pun intended) with 1920′s style jewelry and adornments.

Here’s one of my Great Gatsby style inspiration boards:

Former vintage bride, Ebony, will have you gasping for air over her amazing DIY, 1920′s style wedding photos.  Her creativity, attention to detail and sense of style is off the charts.

Best new bridesmaid dresses

Posted by on January 11, 2011 · 1 Comment

New 2011 bridesmaid dress collections have arrived and I’m happy to report some improvements. Thankfully, dresses are looking less like uniforms.

Are more and more brides are trashing the shallow idea that the uglier the bridesmaids, the prettier the bride?
I CERTAINLY HOPE SO!  Hideous bridesmaid dresses mean the bride has poor taste!
For all you Wed Savvy brides here are some standout new dress options that are sure to keep your gals happy and stylish!

-MODERN, BOHEMIAN

  • The Kylie by Thread Bridesmaids ($290)  This two toned dress is available in both mini and knee lengths.  It features a sweetheart neckline, a double layer skirt, and a stylish combination of taffeta and chartreuse fabrics.  Finally, an option that’s not so monotone and doesn’t involve colored sashes!

-FUN, GLAMOROUS, FEMININE

  • Bill Levkoff Style #594- Strapless cocktail length dress with a sequin bodice and chiffon pleated cummerbund accenting the natural waist. Soft gathered chiffon skirt with overlay draped effect. A two-toned dress featuring sequins and chiffon fabrics that are available in virtually every color combination.  Since I was unable to get images of the fabulous different sequined top options (gold, mocha, white, etc), you must visit the above link to play around.  So many options!

-FEMININE, ROMANTIC, CLASSIC

  • Priscilla of Boston-Love the super sweet, unique flower at the waistline of this silk satin purple gown
  • Monique Lhuillier- Obsessing over the chic shoulder straps.  Flirty and flattering but also a classic gown.
  • Amsale style G30C- That ever so popular flowing chiffon fabric that Amsale made famous takes a unique form in a new, gorgeous color.

-MODERN, GLAMOROUS, FORMAL, CLASSIC

  • Melissa Sweet- this red hot short number accentuates curves in the most flattering way with its unique pleating.
  • Anna Maier-Ulla Maija couture: Just one in the designer’s stunning new line of formal, gorgeous bridesmaids gowns.  This black lace design is sexy and eye-catching without crossing the inappropriate line.
  • White House Black Market:  A satin rosette dress that can be dressed up or down and re-worn.  Every bridesmaid loves a little black dress!

Bag the bouquet!?!

Posted by on September 4, 2010 · 5 Comments

Recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see a bridal party walk down the aisle carrying chic clutches in place of standard bouquets.  The girls looked relaxed and confident with their arms resting naturally at their sides.

The bridesmaid’s clutches were made of black silk dupioni fabric and adorned with different combinations of handmade silk, satin and organza flowers in eye-catching hues of fuchsia and mustard, to match the wedding color palette.

clutches as bouquets

During cocktail hour, the clutches were a hot topic among the guests and the bridesmaids, who showed off the detachable floral embellishments.  Who wouldn’t find use for an elegant black evening bag?

Even the bride gushed about her smart decision saying, “They make adorable gifts and are so much less wasteful than flowers.” As a side note, she added, “the money I saved helped me afford my dream wedding dress.”

While I am not sure who made her custom clutches, I know they were bought on Etsy.
Below are a few examples I found from some great etsy vendors who offer personalized arm candy and discount pricing for bridal parties.custom bridesmaid clutches on etsy

The bridal boom!

Weddings are a 60 billion dollar industry! It’s not surprising that so many companies and designers are eager to tackle the bridal market.  Some recent wedding launches and developments include:

In case you haven’t heard, Urban Outfitters Inc. (which includes Anthropologie and Free People) has been doing some heavy wedding planning these days.  The profitable retailer will be jumping on the bridal band-wagon and unveiling their new bridal business by Valentines Day,  2011.  The currently unnamed website will carry wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, shoes, accessories, gifts and decor.  Wedding gowns will be priced in the range of $1,000 to $5,500.  According to Chief Executive Officer, Glen Senk, the website is only the beginning.  The Company also plans on opening retail locations as well (a la J. Crew).

Now, this is a development I will be closely monitoring… Will the new wedding dress line reflect the eclectic  and bohemian-chic vibe of Urban Outfitters?  I’m picturing lots of empire style gowns!

Oh, the suspense…

If you believe there is no such thing as the “perfect dress,” this might just change your mind…

Style Shake gives women the opportunity to dream up their own couture dress (and/or other garments and accessories). The fun begins by choosing from a wide range of high quality fabrics in many available colors. The styles and fabrics are abundant and up to date with the latest runway trends.

Interested brides can request and receive fabric and color samples to find their perfect wedding hue. Your bridesmaids can add their unique sense of style and are sure to treasure the, often dreaded, dress buying experience.

Design and create coordinated or complimentary looks, or offer your choice of fabric and color and let your maids do the rest…it’s up to you!

The fact that these “haute couture” dresses are likely to actually save your gals money is unbelievable! Dresses typically range from $60 to $200.

Honor thy bridesmaids

Posted by on February 26, 2010 · Leave a Comment

While the role of the bridesmaid should be an honor, it is often a dreaded task.  Brides can take the  ”maid” part of the word literally and forget the “honor” part in the Maid or Matron of Honor.  The responsibilities, expenses and time commitment most bridal parties endure is beyond stressful… and then there’s the tacky and unflattering bridesmaid dress!

NOTE TO BRIDES: Seeing a bridal party looking less than stellar does not make you look better. It only makes guests feel bad for your girls and think you have terrible taste.

Bridesmaid dresses of 2010 are refreshingly stylish and versatile- available in every color under the sun!  Here are some of my top picks:

2010 Best Bridesmaid dresses

Take the pressure of trying to please everyone’s unique body types off of you and let your loved ones have some input!

  • Tell them your color preference and let them present you with their top picks.
  • Choose a bunch of different dress styles you would be happy wearing and let them vote amongst themselves or send you their rankings to find the winner!
  • Pick a versatile dress and let them choose their own versions (e.g. halter, strapless, v-neck…)

Case and point:  If you want your wedding to have a positive legacy, keep your bridesmaids happy.

Affordable, Couture Clutches!

Posted by on September 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Australian designer, Tania Maras of Percy Handmade, creates gorgeous, custom clutches using lush fabrics and lacey embellishments (as pictured). These couture creations can be purchased for only $55 each from her percyhandmade etsy shop.
You don’t have to travel to the land down under for them either. Maras has worldwide shipping! Just allow 7-10 days for shipping and about a week for construction.

Take it from me: I have two of the same cheesy cloth, monogrammed bags from two different weddings that won’t even match my new initials (after my nuptuals). They are probably stuffed in a drawer, just taking up space.
Don’t get your special bridesmaids something monogrammed and manufactured at a dime a dozen you see at virtually every bridal shop…
Honor them with something special to have and to hold forever… like a one-of-a-kind clutch from percy handmade!
